The invention of the traffic signal is credited to Garrett Morgan, an African American inventor and entrepreneur. In 1923, Morgan patented the three-position traffic signal, which included a warning light between the stop and go signals. This innovation allowed for safer and more efficient traffic flow by providing drivers with a clear indication of when to slow down and proceed with caution.

Morgan's invention was particularly significant as it helped to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on the roadways. Despite facing discrimination and challenges as a Black inventor in the early 20th century, Morgan's contribution to road safety continues to have a lasting impact on society.

In addition to his work on the traffic signal, Morgan also invented the gas mask and the hair straightening product that would later inspire the creation of the modern-day relaxer. Garrett Morgan's pioneering spirit and innovative mindset make him an important figure in Black history and the field of invention.
