The National Negro Business League (NNBL) was established in 1900 by Booker T. Washington, a prominent African American educator, author, and leader of the Tuskegee Institute. The NNBL aimed to promote the economic development and empowerment of African Americans through entrepreneurship and business ownership.

Washington believed that economic self-reliance was essential for the advancement of the African American community in the post-Reconstruction era. By supporting the creation and growth of Black-owned businesses, the NNBL sought to uplift Black entrepreneurs, create job opportunities for African Americans, and foster economic independence.

The NNBL provided a platform for networking, business education, and advocacy for Black business owners. It encouraged cooperation and collaboration among Black entrepreneurs and helped to address the systemic barriers that hindered the success of African American businesses.
