The first free Black republic in Black history is Haiti. Haiti, formerly known as Saint-Domingue, was a French colony in the Caribbean that was known for its massive slave population and lucrative sugar plantations. In 1791, a slave rebellion led by Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines erupted, eventually leading to the abolition of slavery in 1793.

On January 1, 1804, Haiti officially declared its independence from France, becoming the first free Black republic in the world.
