The Boston Celtics have a rich history of Black players who have made significant contributions to the team and the sport of basketball as a whole. Throughout the years, the Celtics have been home to many legendary Black athletes, including Bill Russell, who is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Russell, who played for the Celtics from 1956 to 1969, helped lead the team to an unprecedented 11 NBA championships and revolutionized the game with his shot-blocking and defensive abilities. He also became the first African American head coach in the NBA when he briefly served as a player-coach for the Celtics in 1966.
Other notable Black players who have made their mark with the Boston Celtics include Larry Bird, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Rajon Rondo. These players have all played significant roles in the team's success and have helped solidify the Celtics' legacy as one of the most successful franchises in NBA history.
