One notable African American-owned airline in Black history is Air Atlanta, founded by entrepreneur William B. Hartsfield in the 1940s. Hartsfield was a pioneering businessman who saw the potential for a Black-owned airline to serve African American travelers during a time when segregation and discrimination were rampant in the aviation industry.

Air Atlanta operated out of Atlanta Municipal Airport and provided flights primarily for Black passengers traveling to destinations within the southeastern United States. The airline faced numerous challenges due to discriminatory practices and limited access to resources, but Hartsfield's vision and determination helped the company thrive for several years.

Although Air Atlanta ultimately ceased operations in the 1950s, it remains a significant example of African American entrepreneurship and innovation in the aviation industry during a tumultuous period in American history.
